October in St. John brings soft tradewinds, low crowds, and lots of fun events! We’re excited for the Annual Save 2nd Base Block Party to raise funds for breast cancer charities on the Island. This party on October 12 is put on by Woody’s Seafood Saloon and it features live entertainment and lots of delicious food. The Rotary Club’s annual Flavors event at the Westin St. John is returning on November 23 for the first time since the storms of 2017. Held each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, this memorable evening allows guests to dine with all St. John’s best restaurants in one night. There’s even a competition for Best Appetizer, Best Entree, Best Dessert, Best Mixology and a People’s Choice Awards. We can’t wait to see how this year’s entrants will fare in the culinary competition.
And we have BIG news about our very own swim-up dive bar, Lime Out. This taco truck on the water re-opened for the season on October 1, and it was just chosen as one of the World’s Greatest Places by Time Magazine! Lime Out serves surf and turf, ceviche, and fish tacos from a solar-powered restaurant that’s the first floating taco bar in the Caribbean. We’re planning to paddle out for a drink and some tacos very soon. We’re also really excited to hear that a new off-grid luxury resort, restaurant, and beach club is being planned for Lovango. The new owners, Mark and Gwenn Snider, are experienced resort operators with two eco-conscious resorts on the mainland. They’re planning 14 home sites and 25 cottages, and they’ll be bringing back the popular ZoZo’s restaurant. The beach club will be open to local residents, and plans include water sports, a pool, boating services and watersports. It’s a really exciting concept that we are eager to experience. If you haven’t been to St. John in a while, October is the perfect time to Treat Yourself!

Bats of St. John
And speaking of Halloween, here’s some news you can use for the spooky season: did you know that bats are the only land mammals native to Virgin Islands National Park? Despite their reputation, bats help us here on St. John in many ways. We have 6 different kinds here on the island: a diving bat that eats fish, and others that pollinate flowers and spread seeds of fruit trees. They are a big defense against pets like mosquitos, plus they are perfect for our Halloween celebrations this month!

Charity Spotlight: St. John Animal Care Center (ACC)
The Animal Care Center of St. John is a non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being and care of homeless, abandoned and abused animals on the island of St. John. Back in the 1960’s wild dog packs and feral cats were a real problem on the island. Concerned citizens banded together to find a solution. Both animals and people were suffering because there were no facilities for spaying and neutering. In the last four decades, the Animal Care Center of St. John has grown to provide a no-kill shelter for homeless animals. They hold adoption drives and find volunteers to escort homeless animals to the mainland United States, where they are adopted by families. We love supporting this charity, and we never miss their big February gala, one of the highlights of the social season here on St. John.
