St. John Beach of the Month

Reef Bay is the water east of Fish Bay on the other side of Ditleff Point. Reef Bay Beach can be reached by boat or alternatively by connecting into the Reef Bay Trail either of Centerline Road or from hiking across west from Little Lameshur. This long stretch of sand rarely has anyone on it, except for those hiking down from the Sugar Mill and Petroglyph ruins.

Looking for some moderate exercise, followed by a swim, and a ride back to the villa with a few cold drinks – get a ride to the top head of the Reef Bay Trail (or leave a vehicle there), hike down the trail, then hire Yellow Bird Charters to come pick you up, cold drinks and snacks in the cooler, for a sunset cruise that puts you back in Chocolate. The sandy shoreline is a great spot for kids and young children to play and make sand castles. Upside: this beach has bathrooms!

St. John Trail of the Month: Reef Bay Trail

This is a strenuous hike that will take you past some of the oldest and tallest trees on the island. Danish sugar plantation ruins, stone walls from cattle grazing, and ancient rock carvings left behind by the pre-Colombian Taino can be found along the trail. During the rainy season, the waterfall can be spectacular.

This backcountry trail is steep in places, uneven and rocky, and can be slippery even when dry –you’ll need sturdy, closed-toe shoes and a sure foot. Take plenty of water, some snacks and a lunch, and a hat. Mosquito repellent is a good idea, too, and a swimsuit if you’d like to take a dip in the ocean down at the beach at the end of the trail. From the trailhead to the beach is about three miles one way. Plan on about three and one-half hours from trailhead to valley floor; it will take longer hiking the 900-foot elevation gain on the way up and out.

Theresa M. Sim has been a resident of St. John, for over 10 years now. She is just one of the full time Real Estate agents at Tropical Properties and is currently working on her Brokers License. She came to visit back in 2008 and never left! Her journey started at Maho Bay Campgrounds, an Eco-Resort that was nestled in US Virgin Islands National Park.
