St. John Beach of the Month: Jumbie Bay

brought to you by http://stjohn-guide.com/

Jumbie Bay Beach is a great beach during the busy season. It only has 5 parking spots so this beach never gets crowded. It basically gives you the beauty of Trunk Bay (which you can see in full if you swim or paddle out) without the crowds.

The recent Northern Swells have swept away a lot of the beach, so it is quite narrow with not much seating but it also is a great launch point for paddleboarding and snorkeling. It does get rough in a Northern Swell so take care when swimming or paddling, but it can be absolutely fantastic to watch the waves smack into the rocks.

To reach Jumbie Bay, take North Shore Road past Caneel and Hawknest. You will then pass the Easter Rock and see the Peace Hill parking lot to the left. A little after that, there is a small parking for 5 cars to the right-hand side of the road. To the left, a little footpath leads down to the beach. Read about this trail in the “trail” section of our newsletter. It is about 300 yards downhill and not too bad to carry the boards down since the bottom is soft. You can set down the board without damage if you need to take a break or switch sides. You will most likely see some interesting hermit crabs on your walk down, take care not to step on one.

Trail of the month: Jumbie Beach Trail

This trailhead is located on the North Shore and has 5 parking spaces. This trail is the only way to access Jumbie Beach, unless of course, you take a boat. This is a very short trail with a very gradual downward slope. It has a small wooden bridge incorporated in its path once you get close to the beach. These backcountry trails are steep in places, uneven and rocky, and can be slippery even when dry – you’ll need sturdy, closed-toe shoes and a sure foot. Take plenty of water, some snacks and lunch, and a hat. Mosquito repellent is a good idea, too, and a swimsuit if you’d like to take a dip in the ocean down at the beach at the end of the trail.

St. John Charity of the Month

Love City Strong (LCS) serves the community of St. John, USVI, by addressing disaster preparedness and community wellness needs.

What they do:

Resilient Housing Initiative (RHI) – The Resilient Housing Initiative (RHI) focuses on construction projects designed to return St. John’s vulnerable residents to stable living situations. It works to ensure that components of residents’ homes are rebuilt to be more disaster-resistant than their pre-storm conditions.

Water Quality – In 2018, LCS began the Water Quality Project, aimed at testing and increasing awareness of cistern water quality for the island’s most vulnerable residents

Mold Sanitation – With help from the National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors (NORMI), LCS hired, trained, and professionally licensed a crew of St. John residents who worked hard to sanitize homes belonging to full-time residents.

Disaster Preparedness – Building on lessons learned in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Irma, LCS has organized the systems that worked best for St. John into a structured and scalable preparedness plan.

Emergency Response Support – The LCS Go Team conducts door-to-door community outreach, offering residents services that may make it easier for first responders to find them.
