November in St. John

Welcome to November in St. John! This is the time of year when seasonal residents arrive to escape the winter cold, and here on St. John we have lots of exciting events to welcome everyone back home! Here are some of the highlights this November:

November 10: Lucky Chops Full Moon Dinner: “Around the World in 80 Bites”. This monthly culinary event in Cruz Bay features a unique theme and a one-night-only menu designed by some of the most talented chefs in the Virgin Islands. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended.

November 10: Paddle the Park – This unique standup paddleboard race is the perfect way to help the Friends organization raise money for the protection of our marine environment. Held at beautiful Maho Bay, known for its sea turtles, this race offers three different courses, short, open and elite. Plus, there is a youth category. So the whole family can paddle the park for a great cause – protecting our sea turtle population.

November 12: St. John Historical Society meeting at 7 pm. Each year, from November through April you may expect stimulating and entertaining monthly meetings presented by historians, craftspeople, artisans, musicians and educators who will bring to life the rich history of St. John and the Virgin Islands. Meetings are held at Bethany Moravian Church Hall.

November 21: Taste of Two Islands at Mark C. Marin Center, Antilles Campus. Dance to the music of Cool Session Brass while enjoying a utopia of flavors from St. John and St. Thomas’ finest restaurants. Over two dozen restaurants, caterers, spirit specialists, and pastry chefs are slated to participate in this popular event.

Thursdays: Enjoy Open Mic Nights at Coral Bay Caribbean Oasis.  This Singer-Songwriter Showcase happens every Thursday from 6-9 pm. They serve food from 4-8 pm, and the music is always fun so make sure to wear your dancing shoes!

 

Fridays: Maho Crossroads is a minimal footprint pop-up village at Maho Beach. In addition to the Paddle-In Tiki Bar, Love Maho Beach Boutique, and Terrapin Beach Club, now they are offering live music most days of the week, including Acoustic Sunset Sessions on Friday nights.

Sundays: Dog House Pub St. John is your place for NFL Sunday Ticket. Catch all of your favorite sports games each weekend in St. John’s favorite sports bar. Don’t miss karaoke on Wednesdays and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights.

Trail of the month: Lind Point

Trails in the USVI can sometimes be steep and rocky, but this 2.6 mile (4.2 km) route in the Virgin Islands National Park from Cruz Bay up to Solomon and Honeymoon Beaches is one of the most runnable trails on St. John, with incredible views as a bonus. This flat trail is wonderful for a nice stroll, or you can definitely run it.  You can park at the National Park Service Headquarters just off of North Shore Road and follow the paved way out to the trailhead, which hugs the coast heading north past Lind Point and Solomon Beach before arriving at the pristine sands of Honeymoon Beach. The rock and gravel trail can be a little loose at times, so watch your step, but overall it’s a good flat surface with just enough hill work to work up a sweat.  Since the hurricanes, a lot of the trees have grown back, so there are great parts which are shady, but there are still some sunny spots so be sure to wear sunscreen and bring water.  The National Park has done a great job clearing the grass and brush, so the path is currently nice and wide.

 

St. John Villa of the month: Isla Vista

Since becoming incorporated November 30, 1996, St. John Rescue, a nonprofit organization, continues to provide all-volunteer medical and rescue support to St. John EMS, Police, Fire and National Park. Some of you may recognize the construction of their new headquarters on Gifft Hill that was made possible by CDBG grants and will be completed in early 2020!  This building will be instrumental to make great strides this upcoming year. Each year brings on new challenges and St. John Rescue volunteers strive to do their very best by completing trainings, continuing education and keeping a commitment to our community. Theresa M. Sim has been a resident of St. John, for over 10 years now. She came to visit back in 2008 and never left!
