Spooky season is amongst us and it’s about to get spookier… Did you know according to the Farmers’ Almanac on October 31, 2020, it will be the second full moon or blue moon. It will also be the first time a Halloween full moon has appeared for all time zones since 1944.

What is a blue moon? We have the answer for you…. The reason why its called the blue moon is because it is the second full moon in a single calendar month and for this October 31 it is also the third of 4 full Moons in a single season (Autumn). For more than half a century, whenever two full moons appeared in a single month (which happens on average every 2 1/2 to 3 years), the second has been dubbed a “Blue Moon.” In our lexicon, we describe an unusual event as happening “Once in a Blue Moon.” This expression was first noted back in 1821 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Lastly, most blue moons are not actually blue in color. Have a spooktacular October!

St. John Beach of the Month

Denis Bay is a pretty and quiet beach. Its powdery white sand shore is often sparsely populated, primarily because it’s only accessible by a rugged trail or by boat. The trail begins at the Peace Hill trail and descends to the western extreme of the bay. Denis Bay is part of the National Park. There is fair to good snorkeling to be had. Bring snacks and drinks with you as there are no amenities. This is certainly a great place to spend a day on St John if you’re looking for the peace and privacy that this location offers.

Thanksgiving in St. John!

Welcome to November on St John! This is the time of year seasonal residents come to escape the cold weather up north. Did you know that when Daylight Savings Time goes into effect in the States (October – April), we do not change our clocks. Therefore we are an hour ahead of the East Coast and 2 hours ahead of Central Time. November is also a great time to come visit and enjoy Thanksgiving by starting off your day at the beach then follow it up with your Thanksgiving dinner plans. Lastly, November 30th marks the end of the Atlantic hurricane season where we will all do a Happy dance!

St. John Trail of the Month: Petroglyph Trail

St. John Charity of the month: Love City Pan Dragons

Love City Pan Dragons is a St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands-based steel orchestra with nearly 30 members ranging in age from 6 to 70. They have a long, rich history on our home island. The band started out in 1996 as the Ghost Riders Youth Steel Orchestra, borne out of a teen drug and pregnancy prevention after-school program. Over the years, they have played regularly at community events including holidays, arts festivals, and more.

Their mission is to provide a healthy positive extracurricular cultural experience for St. John students from elementary through high school; to enhance the educational experience of Virgin Islands young people by promoting qualities and skills through the learning and performance of steel band music that will assist them in their everyday scholastic settings, and to serve as a cultural force in the Virgin Islands community.
